At least 10 women died of "heatstroke" as over 35,000 people gathered to collect iftar essentials at a village in Satkania upazila of Chittagong this morning.
Nine of the victims died on the spot while another breathed her last at Satkania Upazila Health Complex, our Chittagong correspondent reports quoting Superintendent of Chittagong Police Nur-e-Alam Mina.
The primary cause of the death might be heatstroke while one or two of them might have died in a stampede, the SP said.
A large number of people gathered at a small space, possibly leading to suffocation, the official said.
Almost all the women gathered at Ghatiadanga village to collect iftar essentials were in ‘burqas’, he added.
When people came to know about the distribution of iftar items, they started gathering at Ghatiadanga village in the upazila since last night, said AKM Emran Bhuiyan, additional superintendent of Chittagong police (South Zone).
The gathering was huge as the authorities of Kabir Steel Re-rolling Mills (KSRM) were preparing for distributing iftar items and zakat among 10,000 people, he said.
