Ten business establishments at the city's Armanitola and Mitford area have been fined Tk 18 lakh and a business establishment was sealed off for storing fake personal protection equipment (PPE) on Saturday.
A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-10 in cooperation with the Drug Administration conducted raid at Mitford drug markets from 12:30pm to 8:00pm on Saturday and fined 10 establishments for storing the fake PPEs.
Conducted by RAB Headquarters executive magistrate Akhtaruzzaman, the court also awarded proprietor of a business establishment Mostofa Kamal three months jail sentence, and manager Abu Kaiser six months jail sentence. During the raid, fake PPEs worth Tk 1 crore were seized.
RAB's executive magistrate Akhtaruzzaman said taking advantage of the coronavirus pandemic, some businessmen have been manufacturing and storing fake PPEs at their godowns at Armanitola and Mitford areas.
He said since these seized PPEs including hand gloves, sanitisers and hand rubs had no standard, they can't provide any safety to their users. Rather, these are seriously harmful to health.
